On the recording I have of Goodman's "Tiger Rag" he scoops the pitch, like a
smeared grace note, between each of the three notes (I think he starts the
first one with a scoop as well). He doesn't tongue the notes (hence, the
ties). To add effect, if I remember the spot you're describing, he growls a
little (I've always gotten that kind of growl by humming while I play the
notes, but I haven't any idea how Goodman did it.)

It's a great recording.
