For my own needs (marching band and outdoor concerts with the youth
orchestra) my old Bundy work quite well. I had to retire it this year
(boy does it make a good lamp) and I now have a really nice plastic
Yamaha. (The elementary kids I teach have some really great plastic
Vitos as well and one has a nice plastic Buffet that are great horns.
Anyone of those are great choices, I can only speak personally from a
Yamaha user standpoint and a happy, though young, Bundy owner.) The
Yamaha works well, as long as you use a quality reed and mouthpiece. I
don't think that anything should stop you from liking a plastic clarinet,
even if it does come attached with a stigma. I can only stress that the
mouthpiece/clarinet combination is vital and if you choose carefully,
your new (shiny no less) clarinet should do the job.
