Wow.....this is a toughy.
Small schools vs. big schools.....depends on your comfort level. If you
like a challenge, the fact you will be immersed with tons of other
students, don't mind being graded and evaluated by a Grad. Asst., and are
looking for lots and lots of stimulation (not to mention great
football/basketball/student life), by all means - go for the big school!
I wouldn't give up my undergraduate years at U. Michigan for anything.
If however, you prefer focused, concentrated, non-distracting smaller
classes with a close ratio of faculty to students - with good to great
ensembles but a small/clicish student body - go for the small school.
Make sure you understand the difference between small school,
conservatory, and liberal arts college......they are all different.
Private schools are very expensive, and large state schools can be very
affordable.......both have their advantages and disadvantages.
I have opinions concerning the performance degree/theory degree, but you
can email me privately for those! In the meantime......good luck on your
choice of schools!
