Subject: Libby Larsen's Dancing Solo
Hello everyone -
I'm wondering if someone out there might be able to help me with three
questions regarding Libby Larsen's _Dancing Solo_. I picked the piece up
last year after hearing some discussion of it (I think on this list), but
am only now starting to look at it.
First, in the second movement "-eight to the bar," there's the instructions
"pulse 8" or "pulse x" (depending on the number of beats). I'm wondering,
is this only supposed to be a breath impulse on the beat?
Second, in the third movement "-in ten slow circles," I've noticed a single
pitch discrepancy between the first two lines - the G or Gb in the first
bar of each line. Given that every other pitch is the same (different
registers), shouldn't these two notes be the same, and if so, which is
correct?
Finally, in the last movement "-flat out," there's a single occurance of a
low D (page 11, 2nd line from the bottom). I don't have an instrument
that'll play this note, but given it's unique appearance, I'm wondering if
that might be a typo as well. I tend to think that if a composer has
something like that at her disposal, it'd be used more than once as a
single 16th note, though I could be wrong, and don't want to assume.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, does anyone have any information or direction towards some
information on learning to slap-tongue? I have the Rehfeldt book, but that
isn't so helpful in learning how to do it. Haven't been able to figure it
out for myself, and one of my next projects is the Olah _Sonatina_ which
calls for it frequently. Thanks again.
