They were *German silver* (also known as "paktong" and "maillechort")- a
more ductile alloy than nickel silver - for
instruments of reasonable quality.
The keys of my Buffet B flat are made of this, and are still pleasantly
bright-looking, though I've never, ever polished them since I got the
instrument in 1984.
