Bobbi -

Woodwind Quintets - there's a lot of not-so-good out there, and there's a
lot of good stuff. Regardless on the level of your group, you should have
no problem finding some good things...

I suggest looking at all of the Danzi quintets - there are 9, I think 3 in
each opus 56, 67, and 68. I don't have my CDs in front of me to tell you
which ones I like, but I know there's a g minor in op. 56 and the op. 68
no. 3 is nice.

There are some Cambini quintets that were written before the Danzi's. They
are "cheese" to my ears, but not really _bad_. And of course there are the
seeming billions of Reicha quintets. There are only about 3 are worth
playing, in my experience. Op. 88 no. 2 comes to mind I think, but I don't
have my library handy right now.

Also check out works by Klughardt and Taffennel. When I played, our group
had a set of 5 yellow books filled w/ about 30 quintets. Some short
pieces, some long.

There's the Nielsen Quintet. Beautiful. Difficult. The Hindemith _Kleine
Kammermusic_ is great. Samuel Barber's _Summer Music_ is my absolute
favorite for the medium. Very difficult.

This should give you a start. If you're looking to buy music, the only
problem is to find something that your quintet can play, as the "great"
works are expensive and difficult. Don't waste your money when you can
have some "really good" and more accessible stuff. Do you have a music
library near by? You might check there.

Good luck -

Hi I'm new to the list serve so I will try this again. I would like to know
some basic rep. for a ww quintet. I have just started a group and we seem to
be playing some very easy music rather than standard literature. If anyone
knows of some great quintet music please, please, please, please let me know.
I am wanting to order some but don't want to spend money on crap.
Thanks
Bobbi.
