I agree w/ Bill, that the Bonades are good and cheap. I must disagree,
however, about the choice of inverted. If your reeds are the same general
thickness (and most high quality ones are), then the rails on the "normal"
one will pretty much be in the same place each time. At least I have never
noticed a difference in performance between the two.

What the inverted one does do is scratch the top of your mouthpiece. I
figure I go through reeds fairly quickly--but one mouthpiece every 10 years
or so. Better to scratch up the reeds.

Of course, since I have a beard, the little screws on the bottom can get
caught and cause pain. That's the primary reason I now use the Eddie
Daniels Rovner, which I think y'all should try.

Definitely go with the inverted. With the regular, the rails that contact
the reed could be a different distance apart each time you attach a reed,
depending on the thickness of the particular reed butt, the diameter of the
mouthpiece, and the distance the ligature is from the tip of the reed.
With the inverted ligature, the distance between rails is fixed, resulting
in greater consistency.

When I am not using my Rovner, the Bonade inverted is my choice, if I am
looking for a brighter sound for the particular application.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
