The discussion recently on the basset clarinet piqued my
interest. A relatively well-known composer, Jane Brockman
had visited sneezy and left a number of composition updates
for me, so I posed the question to her ("Why aren't there more
compositions for basset clarinet?") Her response (quoted by
permission):

> Dear Mark,
>
> Thanks for your reply.
>
> Regarding your question on the basset, and why composers don't write for
> it: I only write music when I know a performer or group of performers will
> play it--a lot! Usually, this comes in the form of a commission, or a
> request with promise to program the piece as part of a performer's touring
> repertoire. No one has ever requested music with the basset cl.
