I did something like this for a pair of high-end microphones. I used a wood
cigar box and I went to a sofa factory to get pieces of dense foam. I cut
out inserts in it and then glued a piece of cardboard over the top. Then I
took velveteen and glued it down over the top and around the edges. From
there, I glued the whole assembly inside the box. It was really cheap ($10
for the whole project), looks great and is really sturdy.

I am sure this could be adapted easily for a larger project.
