My daughter's high school has a "Wind Ensemble" but they are using a
very generic type of definition. Basically any one who scores so many
points or more on their fall tryouts belongs not only to the regular
band but is awarded a seat in the wind ensemble. This has the benefit
of providing a reward for students who work hard and learn to play well
yet still allow the regular band to have a full complement of players.
This seems to work fairly well.
