I have the same problem and I think you're right. I put my ligature all the
way down on the bottom of the mouthpiece because I find I get more
flexability that way. One thing I have done to minimize the problem is to
a mouthpiece cushion, as others have suggested, on the top of the
mouthpiece. But, another solution might be just to use a little bigger
ligature. I know they make them to fit various sized mouthpieces.
