Subj: [kl] Marching in the sun

Hello to all.

Our ensemble is practicing to march in the Memorial Day parade.
I happen to use a hard rubber M13 Vandoren on my E-11 Buffet. When
marching, the sun is out. When the sun contacts the rubber, smell
results. It smells really terrible, but then I have to put it in my
mouth.
I can stand that, it isn't too bad. I was wondering, though, if using a
hard rubber mouthpiece in a marching band is bad, and if plastic is
preferred.

On a somewhat unrelated note...
As I mentioned, I own a Buffet E11 with Vandoren M13 mouthpiece. The
M13 was specifically designed for the R13 clarinet, and I assume then
the bores would match exactly. The bore on a Buffet R-13 is .574 while
on my E-11 it is .573. Does this .001 difference have a negative effect
on the tone quality? I know with the right reed I can make beautiful
sounds, but just wondering if I could do better. Probably could if I
could adjust reeds....

Thanks to all.
Mark
