Subj: [kl] triple case plus other stuff
Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 12:10:03 -0400

I prefer the term "clarigeek." ;-)

If not forgetting stuff/music/tuners makes me one, so be it. I would rather
be remembered as the guy schlepping all that stuff than the idiot who forgot
his <fill blank>.

I bring 2 bags to everything. One is a traditional double case. The other
is what lawyers lovingly refer to as a "lit bag"--a catalog case. It holds
the music for every group I play in, a tuner, a triple peg, small
collapsible music stand (how embarrassing not to have one!) several
sharpened pencils and, when necessary, an Eb clarinet (in its case, of
course). My Day-Timer, too--useful for schedules and phone numbers.

Does this set me up as hopelessly anal-retentive? You bet. My wife thinks
so, and she's an oboe player!

I get gigs, however, because I always show up on time--many musicians far
more talented than I don't get called simply because they are not reliable
and/or prepared.

I read in Windplayer a couple of editions ago that the standard practice
among LA studio trumpet players was to bring every horn they own to every
recording session, on hand trucks if necessary. It is ALWAYS better to
bring too much to the gig than too little.

DITTO. DITTO. DITTO. That is why I bother carrying the triple case even if I
suspect I will just use my Bb for a particular rehearsal. Plus I enjoy being
a
nerd (referring to an earlier post about "how nerdy" does the triple case
look).
