From: Steve Owens <showens@-----.com> Subj: [kl] Help replacing a Wells Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 10:50:41 -0400
Many years ago, I accidentally let a Wells mouthpiece go with a
beat-up no-name resonite clarinet, and I haven't played clarinet
since. Too despondent.
Recently, I've wanted to pick my old Buffet back up, but I don't
have anything worth blowing into - not like that Wells, anyway.
I don't know anything about what model, facing, opening, etc. it
was. I'm hoping someone will be able to point me in the
direction of a currently available piece that has similar
characteristics.
I've recently tried a Combs LC1 (just because I met him once when
he was still with Montreal) - it won't open up when I do; the
dynamic range is too limited. I assume I need a larger tip
opening, but do I also need a longer facing? Would a Combs LC3
fill the bill?
An additional consideration - I'm currently doubling soprano sax,
flute, oboe, and English horn on a regular basis, so practice
time is limited. I have a pretty good embouchure, but I don't
want something that requires a lot of finesse to play in
different registers. I want to be able to pick up the clarinet
and go with the chops I have.
