Oops, the @-----. Perhaps it actually came out
on some machines but not on the digest. I usually avoid them in e-mail
anyway but now I know why.

With all the discussion about Basset Clarinet I decided to check my
Orchestration text- Blatter's Instrumentation and Orchestration- 2nd
edition copyright 1997. While the Basset Horn was mentioned none was made
of the Basset Clarinet. Composers and orchestrators rely heavily on such
documentation in order to properly treat instruments. For a clarinetist
who is familiar with the Basset clarinet (and how many of them are there
really?) there shouldn't be a problem, but for a vocalist or brass player
turned composer who may never even have heard of a basset clarinet, well,
they just won't use it.
I don't believe that the answer is merely for players to buy them so that
composers will use them, nor do I believe that composers hold the
responsibility. I do believe that it is an evolution. Someone will buy
one and someone will write for it and this will germinate. Will it take
hold? Maybe, with ardent supporters like Dan, then again maybe not.
Good Luck Dan.

Anne Bell
