I think it does hold up. While the basic fingerings have been around well
over a century, flautists and oboe players gravitated to them pretty early
on (with the exception of a few German schools), while the "Boehm" type
system for the clarinet has been the undisputed standard for less than 75
years.

I'm not slamming clarinetists, just saying that we tend to be a bit more
conservative than some other instrumentalists - not necessarily a bad thing.
