Hi All,

I haven't contributed much in a while, but recently achieved a
significant personal milestone that I'd like to share.

I am a clarinet player of modest competence, recently having
played the 1st part in Rhapsody in Blue and other interesting
tunes. My wife is an oboist who has decided to learn clarinet
(perhaps one reed is easier to deal with than two?). I couldn't
resist the implicit challenge - two months ago I set out to
learn to play oboe.

Knowing that I wouldn't actually do anything unless forced, I put
myself in the situation of being the only oboe player in a small
community band, realizing that the potential for embarassment is
a powerful motivator!

Last night was our concert and my debut as an oboist. Funny, but 25
years of programmed muscle responses for clarinet don't work when
the instrument is an oboe. But, between playing the solos confidently
and laying back on the ensemble parts that were beyond my ability, my
reviewers assured me that I didn't need to be embarassed. :-) I even
had two dynamics! (Doublers on the list will recogize these as mf
and FF!)

As worthwhile as the experience was, I'm still waiting for oboe playing
to be fun, the way playing the clarinet is. Perhaps that comes with
technical facility(?)...

Regards,
Victor Freyer
