Hi Karena,

Maybe you know this already but it took me over a year and a passing
comment by another list member to figure out on my bass so I'll pass along
the tip just in case.

I assume that you are using the same fingerings on the alto that you do on
your soprano clarinet. I also assume your alto clarinet has plateau keys.
Most likely, if it is a good one, the left hand index finger key (upper
joint) has a small hole and the key, itself has a small tab extension at
the bottom. If my assumptions are correct, there may be some immediate
relief at hand (no pun intended). When you play high D and above, instead
of leaving the index finger key open, press it down by the tab (leaving
the small hole uncovered). It takes a little getting used to but it
creates a "half-hole" effect that should greatly improve your response and
intonation in the altissimo register.

Oh, yes. Make sure the little hole is, in fact open by blowing through it
or gently probing with a toothpick. Let me know if this helps.
