Craig,

Two member of the Klarinet list, Connie Josias (Eb clarinet) and me
(contrabass clarinet), play with the Caltech/Occidental College Concert Band
under the direction of William Bing, a superb conductor and even better
trumpet player (LA Phil, LA Chamber Orchestra, LA Opera Orchestra plus lots of
big band and studio work). Bill has been at Caltech for 25 years. His wife
Delores Bing is a cellist also doing studio work and some LA Chamber Orchestra
work and heads the chamber music program at Caltech. They have many small
chamber groups and, I believe, a chamber orchestra, in addition to a shared
full orchestra with Occidental College. Bottom line: there are a LOT of
opportunites for musical performance at Caltech. Bill also conducts two jazz
bands who concertize and play local pub gigs!!

Just last Saturday night at our annual "Bandorama" the concert band did
Jupiter from the Planets by Holst conducted by a grad student (and
percussionist) working on the Galileo project who also plays percussion, In
Dulci Jubilo by Bach arranged by Alfred Reed which was conducted by Dr. Les
Deutch, a JPL scientist who basically saved the Galileo project by figuring
out a way to use the low-gain antenna after the high-gain antenna failed (Les
is also a great composer, keyboardist in one of the jazz bands at Caltech, and
for this concert also played tenor sax), a Sousa '"waltz" entitled "I've Made
My Plans For The Summer (w/vocalist) and a brand-new piece by Dr. David
Whitwell at Cal State Northridge called "Three Civil War Reflections" written
for alto sax and wind ensemble and featuring Jerry Leudders, chair of the
music department at Cal State Northridge. The second movement features the
band SINGING 3-part harmony with marimba and vibes.

Bottom line: music at Caltech is an experience to say the least. I've been
with the band for 12 years now. For even more information, why don't you e-
mail Bill Bing directly at: wbing@-----.edu

Let me know when you're in Pasadena. I'd love to meet you in person!
