The recent discussion of basset clarinets and low-C basses raises an
interesting question (at least to someone who's never played anything
that went lower than low Eb): are the extra notes at the low end of any
use when you're playing around the break, i.e. can you get a decent
sound going below middle B, down to, what? the equivalent of open G? I
would guess maybe not on the bass, but perhaps on the basset clar., say
for trills or other ornaments? Or by the time you're in a position to
own one, is it no longer an issue?
