Here is my reasoning...

Ever put a Bari Saxophone down then standup with the neck strap attached.
Fun, eh? I am a very disorganized forgetful person, I have lost about 10 of
the dang things and if I don't lose them I forget to take them off. I got
sick of buying new ones, so I decided to learn how to play without them.
That in addition to the pain from being nearly strangled was enough.
I don't know why Shouryu does it, but those are my reasons.

Don't worry though. I plan on purchasing a harness for Marching Band...now
if I just remember to take the thing off before we leave the field....
