I've only played a couple of concerts where I had to switch between Bb
and A, and in all of them used separate mouthpiece/barrels (i.e., I used two
"whole" clarinets!) without any problem. It might just be that I'm too
inexperienced to realize that "this is how it's done", but it's certainly
easier!

P.S. I also use separate mouthpiece/barrels when switching between Bb
soprano and bass!
