I have my students get the Vito reed holders - four reed held in place
with a rubber O-ring. They cost about $2.50 (US), and thus are both
cheaper and better than the Vandoren with "activated charcoal" or
whatever. I hate the little dents that the Vandoren leaves on reeds,
though I have no scientific evidence that it affects the reed performance
one way or t'other.

Well, yes, I use one too, but asking a poor student to buy one...I just
can't do that.
