Hi Bernie:

The strips are approximately one inch square and come in lenghts of about
four feet. They are made of a material which is at least similar to foam
rubber, (if it isn't foam rubber). It is a gray color and is used for
filling in cracks, I suppose. I'm fairly sure you can get it, (or something
similar), at most hardware stores. If not, other materials can be used.
The first thing I tried was to take pipe cleaners, work them into a circle
and wrap felt around them until they looked like a doughnut. That worked
very well also, but I found that the foam rubber was much easier to use and
the sound seemed even a little better. You may have to experiment a little
if your equipment is different or your students play differently. Felt is
good - foam rubber is good - and I'm sure there are other materials that
would work as well.

We simply roll up the foam, (not leaving a hole in the middle as I did with
the felt), and insert it to a point where the top of the foam is about a
half inch from the top of the bell.
