I guess I have to stick my 2 cents worth regarding "Matched " sets of
clarinets.

I purchased a B flat and an A Clarinet back in 1987. I did not buy a so
called set of matched clarinets but rather went through 22 instruments
to pick the ones I purchased. I am using a single Borbeck # 11
mouthpiece and Vandoren V12 reeds on both clarinets. The clarinets by
the way are R 13 s I find that I like the A clarinet better than the B
flat.

When I go through a box of reeds I used to toss the ones that I could not
use into a drawer and forget about them. I was too cheap to throw them
away.

I have found that after about a year or so and try them again, I find a
large percentage of them are excellent reeds. I now make it a practice
to buy a box of reeds ----take them out of the holders--- and let them
age for at least a year before even trying them, and get excellent
results with this method. Perhaps letting the reeds age without forced
flatting (sp) and then work on them is the way to go. Anyhow it seems to
work for me. I have been using a Rico reed for the last 6 or 7 weeks.
It is most likely the best reed I have ever used. I gave up buying Ricos
about 15 years ago and this one has been sitting in the drawer all this
time. Can't believe it is a Rico.
