I had an interesting Friday afternoon playing along with my new-found violist
friend and colleague. We played the Kegelstatt trio, the KVA 90 fragment
and the Hummel Quartet for clarinet and strings.

My violist friend graduated from the Curtis Institute years ago and worked
professionally until chucking the whole thing and getting a Ph.D. in Management.
She continues to play in amateur groups and is VERY good. Anyway, I had
forgotten that the La Seccatura movement in the Hummel was written with
different time signatures for different instruments at different places.
For example
it starts out Clarinet: 2/4, Viola 3/4, Violin 12/8 and Cello 6/8 and goes
from there.
When I converted it with MIDISCAN and Finale, I decided on a common
denominator time signature of 6/8, but when playing along with the original
score it is a bit of a chore figuring out where everyone is as regards the
position of the MIDI file. After she and I had done about 40 measures at my
tempo, she said, "O.K., I've got it, now let's crank up the tempo," So I asked
her to tell me when and she said "when" at "eighth note @-----." It was a
super experience and one that I value for someone more knowledgeable than
I telling me what tempo to follow.

Anyway, give yourself a good feel for Hummel's intent by downloading the
MIDI file of that movement and listening to it (you'll have to speed it up --
it's still at my original snail's pace):
