Hi Lori,

There are many people who who advocate drying the reed with the flat side
up......I just haven't found that it works well for me......could be
climate, could be personal bias, could be the reed gods don't like one of
us! It was the same when I lived in Oregon (I live in Illinois now).

What I meant by "sealing" the back of the reed is polishing it to a shine.

Day 1 @-----.

Day 2 = 600 to polish

Day 3 = 600 to polish

Day 4 = 600 to polish, 1200 to polish, and the back of the sandpaper to
"seal" (really put a hard shine on the back...to the point of a
reflection!).

I find that when my reeds stick to the flat table mouthpiece, and they are
hard to break off after a playing session, they last longer and refuse to
warp. These are usually reeds that have gone through the above process.

Hope that helps explain my preparation a bit more clearly.....sorry for
not being as specific in the first posting!
