Subj: [kl] Ignorance is Bliss (I just wanna buy a mouthpiece)

I joined this list just so I could start right out asking an ignorant and=
annoying question.

I'm sure you've discussed mouthpieces endlessly, so if anyone can remember=
any points of concensus and contention they could boil down for me it might=
help.

If anyone has a nice used item for sale I might be interested.

Clarinet was my first instrument (in grade school, nearly 40 years ago), but=
has become the one I have to try to get back to every so often. I still=
have the Selmer Paris I got used back then. I'm sure the whole thing needs=
an overhaul, but I've known I mostly needed a new mouthpiece ever since I=
read up on the subject 20 years ago and found out the facing shoouldn't=
have those scratches in it. Still haven't gotten around to it.

Recently, the place I work became a customer of a music distributor as a=
sideline of our occasional resale interests, and I saw they had some Selmer=
Paris mouthpieces in the catalog. "Great," I thought, "I can get one=
wholesale." But then I thought I should look into the matter a little,=
because there might be something a whole lot better out there. So, I=
started searching the web and now I know that there are so many variables=
and possibilities that I don't have a clue what I should do now. 15 facing=
lengths??? Yikes.

Anyway, I guess the quick fix would be to know what people think are=
_better_ choices for not too much more money, and what is a good source for=
each as far as price goes; OR... is one of the more expensive choices just=
so much better.

I play music based in listening to a lot of traditional American styles,=
with an emphasis on early blues. So, I guess my clarinet playing leans=
toward early jazz in a way. If that defines my needs in any way.

Annoyingly yours,
Barry
