With all this talk of which new instruments to buy, nobody mentioned HOW to
buy one. Many people suggested matching it to your current clarinet - a
great idea. However, once the model has been decided (based on response,
feel, intonation, previous knowledge, and of course, PRICE), one should try
out as many as possible of the same model. I have an r13 set, and if they
hadn't been used, I wouldn't have bought them as a set. The A is the most
gorgeus work of craftsmanship, but the Bb is only an average r13. Although
this makes it a decent horn (and it works with me), it is nowhere near to
the quality of the A. Same year, model . . . even purchased originally as a
set, just very different; I think it's all in responsiveness. So the moral
is . . . if you don't like a model that's supposed to be good, try another
horn of the same type. If you still don't like it, go on. REPEAT OFTEN.
BECAUSE . . . for the same price, you can get a better horn than the one
they first slough off on you.
I wish I had tried out more horns when I bought an intermediate Yamaha a few
years ago. I settled too quickly for a specific horn and should have tried
out others of the same brand . . . model even.
