Karen,
if this is going to be your first A clarinet I would suggest perhaps buying a
used Buffet from someone who is buying a new horn. If you're just getting
started playing and can't afford a new horn, a used buffet or similar model
would be better than a new Noblet or any other second-tier horn (with the
knowledge that you will have to upgrade if you should pursue this
professionally). As far as matched sets go, I've never played a set that
couldn't be matched better with another horn. I'm convinced this is a sales
tactic to sell two clarinets instead of just one. Buy the best A you can and
the best Bb. Try several and take into consideration that the A clarinet is
not a Bb. It will be darker and more resistant, this is a good thing. Don't
try to find the freest blowing A, but rather one that produces the best sound
with the best intonation, even if you have to work a little harder at it. I
play a Buffet R-13 which still sets the professional standard, but last summer
in Tokyo I played several Yamaha A's that were far easier to play than my
Buffet, it was a wake up call for me. My Buffet is going on 12 years of
playing 7 years of schooling and 5 years of orchestral thrashing, it wasn't
fair to compare it to the new horns. But I'm in the market again and I hope
we both end up with winners!
Good Luck,
Mario Estrada
