My alto is a "Buffet" Model 2524 that has the same huge body/bell as the
Kielwierth, and plays just like my friend's Couf (rebranded). I would
not trade it for one of the venerated Mark VIs, which in reality have a
rather thin sound.

Far, far more important for the "classical" sound than the instrument,
however, is the proper mouthpiece. Use a Sigurd Rascher--nothing else
is nearly as good. It comes in exactly one facing (his). It's based on
the design that A. Sax himself submitted to the patent office, and is
apparently a reproduction of an early 1920s Buescher.

One of my good friends, an outstanding classical saxophone player, uses
a gold-plated 192x Buescher w/ the Rascher--Sigurd's exact setup. It
gets a wonderful, amazing sound. Scott owns about 20 altos--including a
handful of Selmers--but refuses to perform on them.

I can't play on the Buescher--the keywork leaves a lot to be desired. I
use the Rascher for classical work, though, and it's fine. It's also
quite easy to pop on the old Meyer for commercial stuff w/o having to
get a new horn.

Shouryu,

You asked about various brands of saxophones. I'm not a sax professor,
but
I do profess the sax - alto, tenor and baritone. I'm not going to knock
any
of the other brands, large or small, because for one thing I haven't
played
more than half of them.

But by far the finest baritone that I ever played was a Keilworth,
although
it had Herby Couf's name on it. Perfect intonation, even on the top and
bottom notes, and it blew as easy as a clarinet all the way down to Bb.
I've also spent some time with a Couf-Keilworth alto that, even though
it
had seen its best days, had a tone so pure and clean it could make you
cry.
If I'm ever wealthy, I'm going to have a rack of Keilworths, alto, tenor
and bari.

No, no soprano. I don't care if Bechet and Coltrane did play one, I
think
they're nasty, squally things that don't do anything a clarinet can't do
better.
