For those interested in the high end of music programs, check out CuBase
Score VST from Steinberg. http://www.steinberg.net

I have been considering different programs as well, including Encore and
Finale, when I came across this offering from a music store here in Norway.
I only have the demo version running on my Mac, but I can record many
tracks direct from my clarinet using the microphone on my computer and then
mix, edit, score, transpose, etc. I admit that using my Mac's microphone
leaves a lot to be desired in terms of sound quality, but it is a simple
way to create a digital recording and/or score of a duet, trio, etc. It
also supports all types of midi devices. The demo version that I have
unfortunately has the "score" section disabled so I have not been able to
play around with that part of the program. What I recall from the quick
look in the music store, the score section was quite powerful as well. I
don't know what it might sell for in the US. It is not cheap and requires
a fast computer, but the possibilities are exciting. With the right type
of microphone, you can have your own mini recording studio right in your
home!

Cynthia
