Fred,

Thanks for reminding me of the Draeseke Sonata:

That was one of the pieces that convinced me (indirectly) to start
computerizing
clarinet music. I took some clarinet/piano music to Paris with me for my
sabbatical leave in 1995, figuring that with all the young people studying music
in Paris I'd surely be able to find someone willing to play some of them
with me.
And living at La Cite Universitaire with all the other poor students and
professors,
to boot! NOT A NIBBLE either to my posted appeals or verbal entreaties around
the Belgian House, where I was living, for a little Saturday morning musical
diversion. Part of the problem is that the young people who are studying music
in Paris are often so intense in preparing for their careers that they just
don't
have the time for such diversions. So I sat in my room evenings playing
among other things that soulful first movement of the Draeske Sonata. Upon
my return I rather forgot about it, but thanks for reminding me. I'll put it up
as a high priority item.

Right now I'm working on the Mozart Second Serenade for
Clarinet Trio (K. 439b) and the Danzi Quintet, Op. 53, No. 1. There was a guy
on the FLUTE group who got me into this quintet business by saying that
the development of wind quintets reached its height during the lives of
Danzi and Reicha, but what I've heard so far doesn't impress me in the
slightest.
Op. 53, No. 1 gives one the feeling that the flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon
are there simply to accompany the piano with pleasant chords and occasional
runs (the first movement, anyway).

Hey, I found a violist in our school of management. Today at 3pm we're going
to play the Kegelstatt Trio, the Hummel Quartet in Eb major and the Mozart
fragment, KVA 90 (too damn bad he didn't complete it -- it's a beaut! Don't
throw out any locks of his hair just yet. We may be able to get Dr. Seed to
clone him!!) 8-)

Oliver
