First, thanks for the very interesting information regarding the
inception of baccalaureate degrees at Curtis students. Also,
thanks for confirming my description of the diploma program
there, which I didn't know predated the academic curriculum.
In response to your comment above, they do have a core faculty
which deals with languages and English, as well as theory and
such. What I've taken away from conversations with former
students is that the academics were (in their time, which
wasn't overly long ago) merely token activities. My friends
were always allowed to do the bare minimum in order to pass,
for the sake of practicing or rehearsing instead. I remember
Eastman's acadmic standards being much more stingent, and this
was back in '88. Whether this policy is good or bad (I think
it's unfortunate), the school has turned out some wonderful
musicians. One of my friends, a flautist, took the principal
job in Atlanta in the middle of her sophomore year at Curtis.
I think they may have offered her a diploma upon her departure,
just so she wouldn't walk away without a degree of some kind.
Her musical talent and expression are heavenly (and I'm not
even religious).
