Neil,
The diploma is non-academic credential offered for students who opt for a
music-only course of study. There are no academics required, as far as I
know. It is not in any sequence in relation to the undergraduate or graduate
degree programs, which do include the normal academic components required by
the national/regional accrediting organizations who recognize degree
programs. The diploma predates the degree programs, which were as I remember
instituted during the Vietnam war (ca. 1966 or 67) to allow Curtis students
to claim student deferments from the draft, which was voraciously swallowing
young men who were not matriculated in accredited degree programs (or
physically unqualified - 4F). At the time, the academics were taken at any
of the nearby schools who would accept the Curtis kids (Temple, U. of
Penna., or several others) and Curtis accepted the credits as transfers. I
think now they have their own faculty at least for basic academics.
