My presumption is that this is an older instrument, probably from before
Leblanc bought out Holton, although I have also seen some "HoltoVitos" out
there. Making the two joints as one piece, while more difficult, offers
certain advantages, chief among these the ability to place the C#/Ab left
pinky key in a more acoustically correct location, instead of the
compromise position forced by the break in the middle. Try a Rossi
sometime to see what can be done. It is more comfortable to hit the key,
too, if designed right. But there's no place to attach your lyre for
marching band! Anyway, the "Collegiate" line, as you might expect, is
basically a student line, although I suspect that yours is an upper level
student model.
