Reply and Retraction:

First of all, I must apologize to Robert Howe! Reading quickly, I thought
it was he who intended to belittle the soprano saxophone. Actually, I agree
with everything he said.

Secondly, what I did say should probably be applied to Mr. Hickling.
Furthermore, I don't see how you could mention S. Bechet and John Coltrane
in the same breath. Just because Bechet's name is well known, it doesn't
mean that he was a fine player or even a mediocre player!! The saxophone,
(soprano or otherwise), is certainly a musical instrument and can certainly
be played beautifully and expressively, and with the right equipment and the
right player, can be as beautiful as any instrument!! Now, if you want to
deride the banjo or the accordian, or bagpipes, or juice harp, I might be
willing to hear what you have to say!!
