In most conversations that I hold either with visible people, or in
Internet Chat, I have never had anyone endorse a Yamaha clarinet. I
occasionally hear about them here. As far as I can tell, from whom I've
met, the first two companies jumped to are Buffet and LeBlanc. But I will
admit - my youth has limited my exposure.
I have an intermediate Yamaha that I play regularly in school. I also have
a set of R13s at home to practice on and play other gigs. The R13 A is the
best specimen I have ever played on, but the Bb is only mediocre (for an
r13). The Yamaha, which I've played longer and gotten used to more, sounds
gorgeous. I just played the Bb R13 in band today, and I'll grant that it
sounded better than the Yamaha intermediate (and cost only as much).
However, the Yamaha plays much more easily, but the tuning and tone are a
little awkward. I'm sure the higher levels of Yamahas are better, but I
can't attest. I would guess that they would be quite excellent clarinets
(expecially if they happen to be good examples of the model - like the A).
I know that I thoroughly enjoy playing my Yamaha, but I don't think the
professional community has accepted them as a standard yet (like they are
beginning to do with LeBland, er LeBlanc).
