Karen,
I'm a freshman in high school who is also planning on a music school as
well...a ways off, but, anyways...
Saint-Saens Sonate, Opus 167 pour clarinette et Piano, is a somewhat
challenging piece, with a unique style from some other pieces. Sonate
by Paul Hindemith is also an excellent choice for a "unique" piece. The
Saint-Saens movements are quite contrasting. It is probably one of my
most favorite songs to play, although I haven't practiced much. I
haven't done enough with Hindemith to advise, but that brings me to my
next topic.
Has anybody ever played much by Paul Hindemith? I was running through
the Sonate with my band director a few days ago. It was really hard,
but I loved playing it! Some of the stuff is still a little over a
player like myself, but I was wondering what you all might think of his
works. I think some of it sounds weird but it's still cool.
Hope some of this helps.
