Sunday I went to the Novi Symphony band summer concert and
found an old friend of mine playing sax there - Irv Feldman,
who's been playing sax and and clarinet in community
orchestras for the last 50 years or so; he still plays sax in
his friend Aldo Moro's big band here in Detroit.
In any case, Irv plays a Selmer Paris Mark VI from the middle
50's. Irv's take on the tone:
The scale and intonation is kind of ragged compared with a
lot of the new models. Since you're constantly compensating,
you get that wonderful sound that the horn is known for.
Irv's take, and another data point. I don't play sax, so
I can't comment, other than to say that Irv's playing is
very enjoyable to my ears.
