Subj: [kl] Brahms Sonatas at auction
Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 00:29:01 -0400

Greetings,
Recently a friend of mine who studies with Charlie Neidich at Stony Brook told
me that the original Brahms sonatas were being auctioned in New York
(Southeby's I think). They were available for limited viewing, before they
were flown to London. Apparently, the Muhlfeld estate has finally released
them, and Mr. Neidich got to view them and was checking some inaccuracies
with the current urtext edition. His fear was that they would fall into a
private collection and be lost to the rest of us. Wouldn't there be any
facsimiles of these scores that would be accurate? What did Henle and
Barenrieter use for their current urtext editions, if not the manuscripts? I
wonder if they've been sold yet and for how much? I wish the library of
Congress would pick them up, or the Eastman Library.
Bye for now,

Mario Estrada,
Florida West Coast Synphony
