Sometime around the mid-70's Goodman soloed with the then-Jackson
(Mississippi) Symphony Orchestra. He did the Weber Concertino and afterwards
"got down to business" (his words!) and played some unaccompanied jazz as an
encore. We had played the Weber "Invitation to the Dance" - I remember his
comments to me in re my rendition of the 1st clar. part were charitable...I
too was in awe of him. Sadly I remember him from that concert as a rather
unhappy man, somewhat difficult to work with as a soloist. But, oh, could he
play.
