It's not just the dust, and it's not toxic in the sense of deadly, but a good
number of people suffer an allergic reaction to cocobolo wood. It's just
easier for dust to get around than the solid wood, so it would be more likely
to cause a reaction.

fortunate (and careful) with my recorder, but apparently rosewood is about the
worst wood for cracking. It's not so much that it's softer (it's still a very
hard wood), but the structure being more porous allows for a place for cracks
to start I suppose.
It's not like it's balsa wood! It's still harder than most other woods. I
once found a table in a woodworking book that listed many types of wood and
graded them for hardness, durability, strength and weight among other
aspects. I used it when trying to decide on a wood for my clarinet case. I
should try and find it since I don't remember what rosewood was rated as.
Although it's too expensive to make a case out of!
