Long tones

Some recent postings brought back to mind some happenings in my younger
days.
I lived in Palestine (now Israel), in a village, with open spaces. You
could hear for miles. No noises, very few cars.
This was at the beginning of the war.

I used to practice long tones every day.
My teacher said : "It's good for you!"

One day I was practicing my long tones, when I see out of the window,
people running to and fro.

I went out on the balcony and asked
"What's going on?"
"There is an air raid siren. Must be an air attack"
I went back into the house, closed the windows and henceforth, played my
long tones with the windows closed.
It wasn't always that pleasant. It could get stuffy.

One other thing my teacher told me was that one should try and play in
an open air place. This way one could hear the "real" tone without
feedback's from the wall.

There was an orange grove near our house. I used to go in there from
time to time to practice.
But the scent from the oranges was over powering. I would take an orange
and peel it and eat it.
Forget the long tones.

I still like oranges.
