If the Beacon clarinet has a metal tube in the upper joint, the instrument may
be made of hard rubber. According to a 90-plus year old former repairman for
the long-defunct Pruefer Company, rubber was extruded over metal tubes. Then
tone hole were cut and so on. Perhaps this process was used with other
materials, but the only clarinets that I have seen that have metal liners in
the upper joints are hard rubber instruments.
