I played the Poulenc Sonata for clarinets in Bb and A on 2 Eb PICCOLO
clarinets (with me transposing the A part as if written for D clarinet)
a few years ago with Gwen Winkle, a really marvelous Eb PICCOLO clarinet
player from Connecticut. It was dreadful. Sounded like cats mating on
the fence. Poulenc cursed us from his grave. I will never do such a
thing again. But Gwenny, at least, made the first part sound musical,
if rather high....

Even worse is the same piece on Eb PICCOLO clarinet and Eb SOPRANINO
Saxophone, but I don't dare tell a bunch of Klarinettists about that
debacle...

Cheers,
Robert Howe
