Recently I was looking for a "new" clarinet. I'm not a pro or even close,
but I played many years as a child and teenager and I've got my own ideas
what sounds and feels good to me. I had my heart set on a Buffet R-13 and
even ordered a bunch of them from the Woodwind and the Brasswind to try.
While I was looking I stopped in a music store in the valley that had a
bunch of R-13s and a used Yamaha. I tried all of them and fell in love with
the Yamaha. Now I'm not a professional, but I appreciate a fine instrument.
Once I found the Yamaha the R-13 just didn't do it for me any more. Why?
The Yamaha felt more natural for me to play; the tone was more even
throughout the registers; it just felt and sounded "right" to me. Do I
think a professional could play this clarinet? No question in my mind. I'm
sure a pro would make it sound even a lot better than I can. Would they
sound different or better or worse than on a Buffet R-13. That's highly
subjective. Even my dogs can tell the difference between the Yamaha and the
Bundy though. If I play the Bundy they bark at me or leave the room. If I
play the Yamaha they'll happily sit right next to me.
