Oh, how I wish this were true even half the time, Sarah Beth. In fact, in
our schools, exactly the opposite tends to be the case. Aggravating the
problem is the increasing tendency at least in our school district for the
varsity coaching positions (even at the middle-school level) to be filled by
outside coaches (not regular district teachers). These people are more
difficult to contact and negotiate with. They are also more mono-focused on
the success of their teams because their continued employment as coaches
depends on it. Other school-centered programs have no importance to many of
them. We have, in my district, all but given up on after-school rehearsals
in order not to place students in positions of conflict between equally
important but conflicting activities.

On the broader question, I am reading others' posts with interest. We have a
system of rehearsals during the middle school day, but I don't find it at
all satisfactory, Rather than share it, I'm actively shopping for better
solutions to the problem than ours.
