Our middle school kids, grades 6, 7, and 8, are on the "team concept"
and kids do have individual schedules within the teams (there are 2 or 3
teams per grade). The kids take their academic courses (math, reading,
language, science, history) within the team. The teams combine for other
courses.

We have 2 band periods per grade--usually brass and percussion in one,
and woodwinds in another. They meet every day, all year long, one band
director teaching all the band classes.
They're on a semester system. My child's schedule is the same all year
except for one period--an "exploratory"--which changes every 6 weeks.
She's had PE 3 times; health once; 1 art history; one something
else--could be a language or technology. Everything else stays the same.
Kids can take chorus or band all year long, if they want to; those who
don't are shuttled into extra PE classes.
Gifted classes are taught as a class, every day, in English and in
Science.

I guess the difference is in the individual scheduling.
