Subj: [klarinet] Reply-To addresses on klarinet

There are two ways to set up the Reply-To: addresses on a mailing
list:

1) Where hitting the "Reply" button sends mail to the list and
2) Where the "Reply" button sends mail to the person who sent the
posting.

Way back when - a couple of years ago - the listserv sorfware
set it up so that a simple "Reply" sent a message back to the
sender, not the list. You can to consciously do a "Reply to all"
or type "klarinet@-----.

When Klarinet switched to majordomo at the Virginia CC, the Reply
address was set to klarinet@-----. That way a push of
the "Reply" button sent your mail merrily back to the list.

I can set up ezmlm, our mailing list software, to work either way
(not both!). I initially did it as the way majordomo did it, but I've
received a request to set it the other way; a Reply will send a
message to the poster, not the list.

In mail list terms, the "Reply" sending a message to the poster rather
than the entire list is preferable. There are a number of reasons,
the primary one being an unwritten rule that forging a reply address
is not a "good thing". A secondary reason is hitting the "Reply"
button can accidentally send a private message to the entire list;
I've done it and been embarrassed, as have others.

If you have a preference, please drop me a line at charette@-----.org
Just say "stay the same" or "change it".

Back from trying to clean up his boat so he can sell it for tuition
money for one of the kids :+/
Cheers,
